Barry Green, a native Californian, served as Principal Bassist of the Cincinnati Symphony for 28 years, and more recently Principal Bassist of the California Symphony and Sun Valley, Idaho Summer Symphony. As former Executive Director of the International Society of Bassists, he is currently directing a young bassist program for the San Francisco Symphony Education Department, teaches privately and at the U. of Calif. Santa Cruz.
Green is also author of three books dealing with the philosophy and methodology of the musician’s mind, body and spirit. Green’s first book (Doubleday, 1986) The Inner Game of Music, with W. Timothy Gallwey, is about overcoming mental to performance and learning through concentration skills of awareness, commitment and trust. Green has also authored seven Inner Game of Music Workbooks (GIA) for keyboard, voice, instruments and ensembles. Green’s second book, The Mastery of Music, Ten Pathways to True Artistry (Broadway/Doubleday 2003) is based interviews with over 120 world famous musicians on topics the human spirit like courage, passion, creativity, discipline, humility etc. Music for People’s founder David Darling inspired Green’s latest book (and DVD) called Bringing Music to Life! (GIA/Spring, 2009). It explores channeling creativity and inspiration through the body with breath, pulse and movement skills.
