Carey Cheney has been teaching and performing for 40 years. She is a SAA Registered Cello Teacher Trainer. She began her cello studies in Vancouver, Canada, with Judy Fraser. Afterwards, she studied with Malcolm Tait at Brandon Univ., and on to Germany where she studied with Andre Navarra. She holds the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts from the Univ. of Utah, and a Master of Music in cello performance, from the Univ. of Texas at Austin. While there she studied cello and pedagogy with Phyllis Young. She has taught many Suzuki institutes in the US, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.
She often travels internationally: to Canada, Mexico, Japan, Europe, New Zealand and Australia. She is the author, recording artist, editor and arranger of the 8 volume series, Solos For Young Cellists.
Internationally recognized lecturer and master teacher trainer Pamela Devenport teaches Long Term Cello Suzuki Pedagogy at the School for Strings, New York, NY. Ms. Devenport is the author of “Cellostart: Essential Elements of Cello Pedagogy”, and has toured, lectured, and taught all over the world. A lifetime learner, Pamela has degrees and diplomas in Music, Biology, and Energy Healing which all aid in her many presentations about the physical body, character development, and communication.
Dr. Evenchick has been a cello teacher trainer for the Suzuki Association of the Americas since 1999, and in this capacity has trained hundreds of musicians internationally at their various stages of development.
Teamwork and organizational contribution are an important part of Dr. Evenchick’s role in teaching and bringing people together. He has held positions at the Preucil School of Music, Grinnell College (Iowa) and the Suzuki String School of Guelph (Ontario) .
Currently David is offering long-term string teacher development courses at Wilfrid Laurier University (Kitchener Waterloo, ON), the first program of this kind offered in Canada.
Nancy Yamagata holds a Bachelor of Music in music education from the University of Southern California where she was recognized as the Outstanding Graduate of the School of Music in 1978. She began her cello studies in Los Angeles with Eleonore Schoenfeld and studied Suzuki pedagogy with Rick Mooney, Barbara Wampner, Tanya Carey, and Gilda Barston. In 1986 she received the SHAR Distinguished Young Teacher Award at the Biennial SAA Conference. Ms. Yamagata is the cello coordinator of the Suzuki String Program at the Colburn School of Performing Arts in Los Angeles where she has taught for the past 38 years. In addition, she has directed the Chamber Music Workshop at the Los Angeles Suzuki Institute and is a valued member of the National Cello Institute faculty.
