The Suzuki Association of the Americas is thrilled to announce the Suzuki Training Committee (STC). The Suzuki Training Committee is an advisory committee that will support the Executive Director in ensuring Teacher Development courses offered by the SAA maintain the vision and direction of Dr. Shinichi Suzuki. The committee will provide support and advice to the Executive Director, ensuring that the SAA meets its mission to, “improve the quality of life in the Americas through Suzuki education,” and to “create a learning community which embraces excellence and nurtures the human spirit.”

Goal: Teacher Trainers who are part of the Suzuki Training Committee will serve in an advisory capacity to the Executive Director, offering input and advice for ensuring our courses uphold the vision and direction of Dr. Suzuki, and the mission of the SAA.

The group will meet roughly nine times per year to support the Executive Director in topics such as (but not limited to):

• Do our course offerings uphold the vision and philosophy of Dr. Suzuki? Do they meet the mission of the SAA? How do our courses meet this vision he has outlined, and how can we improve?

• How can we balance ensuring our Teacher Trainer curriculum is rigorous and effective while also meeting the needs of our teachers? Do we support teachers in meeting the current needs of students, parents/guardians, and families?

• What recommendations should we make to teachers about in-person versus online training? We know that online access has made training more accessible. Are we confident the quality is as good as an in-person course? Do we have a way to assess this?

• Do we feel our current course offerings support teachers in being well-equipped music educators, and representatives of the Suzuki Method and philosophy?

• How can we ensure our courses create inclusive environments for teachers of diverse backgrounds, abilities, and financial circumstances?

• How can we increase communication between all Teacher Trainers within our region? How do we ensure Teacher Trainers from anywhere in our region are well-informed, collaborative, and have spaces for belonging and connection?

This work will support the SAA in ensuring that teachers who receive training from the SAA have an experience that inspires them as individuals and therefore inspires the youth who learn from our teachers.

Who will make up the STC?

The Suzuki Training Committee (STC) will include 10-20 SAA members who meet the eligibility requirements listed below. We seek individuals willing to volunteer their time, effort, and energy toward making our teacher development stronger. The group will meet approximately once per month. Terms for committee members will last 2-3 years, and the committee will grow in size each year for two years to ensure overlap between new and existing members.

Eligibility Requirements:

• Teacher Trainers are highly encouraged to apply (if you have already been designated as a Teacher Trainer, you do not need a Certificate of Achievement to be eligible)

• Individuals who have been members of the SAA for at least five (5) years and have completed a Certificate of Achievement are also eligible to apply

  • Note: Because Brass is still an area of development, we will make an exception for any interested applicants who are brass musicians, but do not meet one of the requirements listed above.

Update: We heard feedback about the Certificate of Achievement as a barrier to entry, especially for our colleagues in Latin America. To better support our goal of including a wide variety of perspectives on this Committee, we are encouraging anyone who has been an SAA member for 10 or more years to apply (with or without a Certificate of Achievement).

Important Note: The work of this group will take place in English. We know that several members speak Spanish, French, and Portuguese. We want to ensure these perspectives are represented in this group, and also want the group to communicate effectively together. We highly encourage members who meet the requirements above, and who are from Latin America and speak English to apply. We also highly encourage members who are from Canada, and especially French-speaking regions of Canada to apply. The SAA Team will continue to collaborate with Country Association Leaders and the Board of Directors to ensure policies created support the work of Latin America and Canada and to ensure these voices are well represented in the SAA.

Additional Qualifications:

• Must be a current member of the SAA

• Must honor and value diverse perspectives and backgrounds

• Demonstrates a deep commitment to the Suzuki Method

• Demonstrates a commitment to the philosophy of Suzuki, including a history of upholding the SAA’s Aspirational Code of Ethics

• Demonstrates a willingness to represent member perspectives and a willingness to connect with members of the SAA

• We highly encourage applicants who have multiple perspectives and lenses—those who are Institute Directors, have led Festivals, work in Latin America, and/or who have worked as administrators

• Administrative experience preferred

• Must be available to offer the list of commitments below

STC Members will be asked to:

• Volunteer 2-4 hours per month to the SAA

• In addition to meeting as a group, STC members will be asked to hold open office hours to connect with members whose instrumental groups fall within their roles. They will also be responsible for collaborating with any active instrumental committees.

• Represent specific instruments or instrumental groups

• Read and uphold the SAA Community Guidelines and the SAA’s Aspirational Code of Ethics

• Work collaboratively with teachers and leaders who may have differing perspectives, opinions, and experiences

• Representing the SAA in communications about the organization

Angelica Cortez

Executive Director, Suzuki Association of the Americas
Instrument: Trumpet

Angelica Cortez (she/her) is a Los Angeles-born arts leader working at the intersection of music, education, and equity-centered practice. She began her tenure with the SAA in January, joining a long legacy of educators who believe in the fundamental power of music education and its ability to impact the lives of young people. Angelica previously served as Interim President and CEO of El Sistema USA, where she led fundraising efforts, strategic partnerships, programming, and managed the general operations of the organization. She worked on Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles (YOLA), Gustavo Dudamel’s signature program, and launched YOLA National, which included annual Symposia for administrators and educators, music festivals and college support for young people, and several national and international tours. Angelica was selected as one of eleven fellows for Sphinx LEAD (Leaders in Excellence, Arts, & Diversity), a two-year leadership program designed to evolve the industry landscape by empowering the next generation of executive leaders. She is an active speaker, educator, and consultant, recently connecting with students at Cornell University, University of California Berkeley, and University of Southern California. Angelica has degrees in trumpet performance and teaching from University of California Davis, Longy School of Music, and Bard College. Outside of her work and healthy obsession with music, she loves writing, cooking, running, reading, and her community.

Carrie Reuning-Hummel 

Teacher Trainer
Instrument: Violin

Carrie Reuning-Hummel began the study of the violin at the age of five with her parents, Joan and Sanford Reuning in Ithaca, New York. She was one of the first Suzuki students in the U.S. and studied with Shinichi Suzuki on numerous occasions. Carrie is the director of Ithaca Talent Education, a Suzuki music school, and is a registered Suzuki Teacher Trainer who headed and taught the long-term MM graduate program at Ithaca College in Suzuki Pedagogy and Performance (violin and viola) for nine years. She is a registered Suzuki Teacher Trainer. Carrie has taught at hundreds of institutes and workshops throughout the continental U.S. as well as in Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and Israel. In 1986 she was honored to receive the Shar Distinguished Young Teacher Award. Carrie served on the national Board of Directors of the Suzuki Association of the Americas for six years. Carrie received a BA in Psychology from the University of Iowa and is a professional violist and an active performer. She recently completed a Master’s of Science degree in Communications at Ithaca College, writing a thesis on powerful learning experiences. Carrie home-schooled her two children and is interested in exploring parent/child practice partnerships with families. She has written a book called “Time to Practice: A Companion for Parents.” Her website is www.soundcarries.com.

Lynn Tuttle, CAE

Executive Director, American String Teachers Association
Instrument: Flute

Lynn Tuttle, CAE, serves as Executive Director and CEO of the American String Teachers Association, the nation’s premiere service organization for string educators in schools, in private studios, and in higher education. Prior to coming to ASTA in June 2021, she served as the Director of Public Policy, Research, and Professional Development for the National Association for Music Education (2015-2021), overseeing all in-person and virtual professional development, the creation and dissemination of six publications, and the association’s federal grants portfolio. She also led the association’s policy work at the federal and state levels. Ms. Tuttle has also served as the Director of Arts Education for the Arizona Department of Education (2003-2015) and is a founding member of the State Education Agency Directors of Arts Education (SEADAE).  She co-led the creation of the 2014 National Core Arts Standards, and is the guest-editor for the Arts Education Policy Review focused on COVID-19 and K-12 arts education. Ms. Tuttle holds a Bachelor of Music degree in flute performance from the Peabody Conservatory of Music (valedictorian), Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees in the humanities and world history from the Johns Hopkins University (Phi Beta Kappa), and an MBA from the W. P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University. She continues to teach, study, and perform as a flutist and singer, and is the mother of two young musicians, Peterson (violinist and euphonium player) and Landon (musical theatre). She currently serves on the board of the National Dance Education Organization and the Advisory Council of the Arts Education Partnership.

Elle est une formatrice d’enseignants Suzuki enregistrée. Carrie a enseigné dans des centaines d’instituts et d’ateliers sur tout le territoire continental des États-Unis ainsi qu’à Hawaï, à Porto Rico, au Canada, au Mexique, aux Bermudes et en Israël. En 1986, elle a eu l’honneur de recevoir le prix Shar Distinguished Young Teacher Award. Carrie a siégé au conseil d’administration national de la Suzuki Association of the Americas pendant six ans. Carrie a obtenu un BA en psychologie de l’Université de l’Iowa et est une altiste professionnelle et une interprète active. Elle a récemment obtenu une maîtrise en sciences de la communication à Ithaca College, en rédigeant une thèse sur les expériences d’apprentissage puissantes. Carrie a fait l’école à la maison pour ses deux enfants et s’intéresse à l’exploration des partenariats de pratique parents/enfants avec les familles. Lynn Tuttle, CAE

Lynn Tuttle, CAE, occupe le poste de directrice exécutive et de PDG de l’American String Teachers Association, la première organisation de services du pays pour les enseignants de cordes dans les écoles, les studios privés et l’enseignement supérieur. Avant de rejoindre l’ASTA en juin 2021, elle a occupé le poste de directrice des politiques publiques, de la recherche et du développement professionnel pour l’Association nationale pour l’éducation musicale (2015-2021), supervisant l’ensemble du développement professionnel en personne et virtuel, la création et la diffusion de six publications, ainsi que le portefeuille de subventions fédérales de l’association. Elle a également dirigé le travail politique de l’association aux niveaux fédéral et étatique. Mme Tuttle a également occupé le poste de directrice de l’éducation artistique au sein du département de l’éducation de l’Arizona (2003-2015) et est un membre fondateur de la State Education Agency Directors of Arts Education (SEADAE).  Elle a codirigé la création des National Core Arts Standards de 2014 et est la rédactrice invitée de la Arts Education Policy Review, axée sur le COVID-19 et l’éducation artistique K-12. Mme Tuttle est titulaire d’une licence en flûte du Peabody Conservatory of Music (major de promotion), d’une licence et d’une maîtrise en sciences humaines et en histoire du monde de l’université Johns Hopkins (Phi Beta Kappa), et d’un MBA de la W. P. Carey School of Business de l’université d’État de l’Arizona. Elle continue à enseigner, à étudier et à se produire en tant que flûtiste et chanteuse, et est la mère de deux jeunes musiciens, Peterson (violoniste et joueur d’euphonium) et Landon (théâtre musical). Elle est actuellement membre du conseil d’administration de l’Organisation nationale de l’enseignement de la danse et du conseil consultatif de l’Arts Education Partnership.
