Dr. Takeaki Miyamae

Takeaki Miyamae began his flute studies at age nine with Suzuki Flute Method founder, Toshio Takahashi. By the time he was 13 he had already mastered most of the solo repertoire, etudes, and exercises of the French Flute School. When he was 11 years old, Takeaki began to study with the legendary flutist, Marcel Moyse (1889-1984) in Brattleboro, Vermont; Honolulu, Hawaii; and Matsumoto, Japan. Upon listening to Takeaki’s performance, Marcel stated that he will one day be “not the king, but the emperor of flutists”. From age eleven to fifteen he gave many recitals in the United States and Canada. At the age of 14 he presented a solo recital at the 1981 National Flute Association Convention in Detroit, MI.

Following Marcel Moyse’s demise Takeaki stopped performing professionally as he lost his great mentor and went into medicine. He earned medical doctor degree at Yokohama City University School of Medicine in 1991 and Ph.D in Medicine at Yokohama City University Graduate School in 1999, and worked as a neuroscientist for 10 years.

In 2001 Dr.Miyamae resumed his professional music career and started to study with Louis Moyse (1912-2007). Since then he has appeared in television, has recorded several CDs in Japan and has appeared in solo and chamber music performances in the U.S., Taiwan and Japan. In 2002 he recorded the Suzuki Flute School Official CDs for Volumes 8 and 10. In 2010 he presented concert tour in Japan (Tokyo, Nagoya, and Matsumoto), recital & materclass at Principia College, Elsah, IL, and recital for the Jureit Musicales in Stuart, FL which was supported by Marie and J. Calvin Jureit Foundation. In 2011 Dr. Miyamae made his debut in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York as a First Prize Winner of the American Protégé International Competition of Romantic Music 2011. He also received Honorary Mention Award of the 12th International Web Concert Hall Competition 2011 and Most Distinguished Musician Award with Special Mention of the 20th IBLA Grand Prize International Music Competition 2011. As a flute teacher Dr. Miyamae presented the masterclass at the National Flute Association Convention in Pittsburgh in 2006. Currently he is a faculty member of the Westmoreland Suzuki School of Music, Greensburg, PA, and a guest faculty of the Suzuki Association of Greater Washington DC Flute Institute. He teaches at the International Academy of the Suzuki Method, Matsumoto Japan as a visiting instructor. Dr. Miyamae is in demand both as a performer and teacher. (Feb 2012)
