Sarah E. Wood

Violin, Viola Teacher

Hello! I teach over Zoom and at my home studio in Richmond. In addition to private lessons, my students participate in three studio classes and two recitals scheduled throughout the year. I primarily work with students preparing for auditions and to elevate their level of playing from intermediate to advanced. Please contact me if you would like to see if my studio is a good fit for you.

About me:

I have over 20 years of teaching experience with students of all ages and abilities. My students are members of the Crowden School, the Oakland Youth Orchestra, the Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra, the Berkeley Youth Symphony, the Villa Sinfonia, and the YPCO. Former students have gone on to study music at Wheaton College, University of California at Riverside, University of the Pacific, and other universities.

I received my formal Suzuki training from Dr. William Starr while earning my Doctorate in violin performance from the Univerity of Colorado at Boulder. I also hold Bachelors and Masters degrees in violin performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music, where I studied with Paul Kantor and William Preucil.

I am also an AmSAT certified Alexander Technique teacher, and have extensive training in Body Mapping (Andover Educators). With this background, I have worked with many players to reintegrate (or just integrate!) principles of healthy movement and mindfulness into their violin playing. I also design 3D printed ergonomic custom chin rests and shoulder rests for my students if needed.

Beyond teaching, I maintain a busy performing schedule playing for the San Francisco Symphony and as a soloist and chamber musician.
