Oshagan Merjanian

Oshagan was born into a musical family. His mother began teaching him piano when he was three years old. He added cello studies when he was ten. 

Oshagan completed his Bachelor’s Degree in cello performance at Cal State University, Northridge under the tutelage of Dr. Diane Roscetti. During his time there, Oshagan was awarded the CSUN Arts Council Scholarship for Extraordinary Achievement in Music, made the Dean’s List three times, was selected to be the cellist for the competitive Samuel Goldberg Honors String Quartet, and sat first-chair in the cello section of the CSUN Symphony Orchestra. After this he earned the Masters Degree in Cello Performance from UCLA, studying with Antonio Lysy. At UCLA, Oshagan was awarded the Gluck Foundation Scholarship, was a member of the UCLA Gluck Cello Quartet, and received the coveted Mangasar M. Mangasarian Scholarship which covered his tuition for a whole year. He also sat first-chair in the UCLA Opera Orchestra for the West Coast premier of Janice Hammer’s, Lost Childhood. Oshagan is currently working on his Performance Certificate at the University of Houston on full scholarship.

Amidst his ongoing studies, Oshagan continues to develop his passion for teaching. He founded Oshagan Merjanian Music in 2010 in San Jose, California, where he taught before moving to Los Angeles. He has taught piano and cello to students ranging from age three to ninety-three. He has also coached youth orchestra cello sections and is loved by his students everywhere for his caring, thorough, patient yet persistent approach which treats each student as an individual and helps them achieve their personal best. ​

Oshagan is currently teaching students in California in person and online while continuing to work with his students in Houston, Texas online. With the changing educational landscape brought about by the Covid-19 crisis, Oshagan was well prepared to respond with his already-running online business and is expanding it now as most educational modalities have turned to the web. 

Oshagan’s passion to provide high-level musical training was birthed early in his life through his own educational journey. His goal is to help each student reach their full potential. He cares about excellent music making and, even more, is interested in the character developed by striving for musical excellence. He believes every human, child and adult, has an inherent love for music and a musical voice they need to express. This is why he finds great fulfillment in helping students of all levels and ages realize their musical dreams through classical music lessons. At Oshagan Merjanian Music, you can!
