Laura Scarlata

Flutist Laura Scarlata is an active performer and educator in the San Francisco Bay Area and Central Valley, CA. In addition to appearing regularly throughout the area in a variety of musical venues and roles, Laura is a founding member of Duo Camaraderie together with pianist Sharon Lee Kim, as a fiscally-sponsored affiliate of InterMusic SF. She performs flute and piccolo frequently with numerous ensembles, including Symphony Silicon Valley, Modesto, Marin, Santa Cruz, Merced, Vallejo, and Berkeley Symphonies, Symphony Napa Valley, Berkeley Community Chorus and Orchestra, Symphony of the Redwoods, St. Helena Chamber Singers, as well as in Woodminster Theater, Modesto Performing Arts, and Berkeley Playhouse musical productions, and was also on the substitute list of the New World Symphony. She has performed recitals and in concerts in New York, Europe, and locally, and was featured as soloist in a live performance of Saint-Saens’ “Volière” (“Aviary”) in “Carnival of the Animals” on Rochester, New York’s WXXI Classical Public Radio 91.5 FM. Laura received her undergraduate musical training at the Eastman School of Music, and continued her musical education in Vienna, Austria. After graduating with honors in German and music from the University of Rochester, she went on to earn a Master of Music degree in Flute Performance at San Francisco State University, where she studied with Linda Lukas, and was coached weekly by the Alexander String Quartet. Awarded a merit scholarship to attend the Aspen Music Festival in the studio of Mark Sparks, Laura performed in the Aspen Chamber Symphony, Sinfonia, Opera, and Festival Orchestra under several renowned conductors, including Julius Rudel, David Zinman, and Robert Spano. Laura has been a performing participant in many masterclasses, including those of Julius Baker, Keith Underwood, Liisa Ruoho, Walfrid Kujala, Trevor Wye, Martha Aarons, Jeanne Baxtresser, and Alexa Still, and has studied with Linda Lukas, Caryl Mae Scott, Anne Lindblom Harrow, and Meinhart Niedermeyr, as well as Damien Bursill-Hall, Martha Aarons, Bonita Boyd, Mark Sparks, and Liisa Ruoho, among others.

A passionate teacher and frequent coach, adjudicator, guest artist, and clinician, Laura is the flute instructor and a chamber music coach on the faculty of the Crowden Music Center, as well as at the Oakland School for the Arts. On the occasional Sunday she isn’t performing, she can be found coaching Adult Chamber Music groups at the Marin Community Music School. Laura enjoys teaching and coaching students of all ages, and teaches Suzuki flute lessons both in Berkeley, as well as at her home studio in the Richmond/El Sobrante area. Her wonderful students are/have been members of Oakland Youth Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra, Young People’s Symphony Orchestra, Modesto Youth Symphony, and Berkeley Youth Orchestra.
