Dr. Joyce Chan Grabell

Joyce Chan Grabell is a trained Suzuki violin and viola instructor and is on faculty at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) Preparatory Division. She is the director of CCM Preparatory’s Suzuki Strings Program.

Dr. Grabell received her Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in Viola Performance from the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music, with an additional focus on music theory. Her primary viola studies have been with Catharine Carroll, Karen Ritscher, Martha Strongin Katz, and Stephanie Baer. Dr. Grabell’s research interests focuses on the pedagogy of string playing. Her journal article “Forward Motion: Teaching Phrasing Using Marcel Tabuteau’s Number System” won first place in the Dalton Viola Research Competition and appeared in the Journal of the American Viola Society in the Spring 2013. In addition, she was awarded the Strings Magazine Award for her commitment towards string music education. Dr. Grabell was a clinician in the Young Professionals Masterclass at the 2014 Primrose Viola Festival.
