Joseph Steinbart is a violist/violinist from Hartland Wisconsin. The youngest of seven kids, he grew up around music and started violin when he was eight years old. He studied violin for ten years and took lessons from multiple teachers including Elizabeth (Betsy) Pabon. While really enjoying violin, Joseph started playing viola in high school and found he loved playing the viola more than the violin. He officially switched to viola when he went to college. Joseph attended Maranatha Baptist University in Watertown Wisconsin and majored in Church Music with a minor in Pastoral Studies. At MBU, Joseph studied viola with Lewis Rosove, retired assistant viola principal of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. Joseph taught private violin and viola lessons to a variety of ages for the Maranatha Music Prep School as well as weekly group and theory classes.

In his undergrad, he traveled with MBU’s Chamber and Heritage Singers. In 2018, Joseph won the Fine Arts Commencement Competition at MBU and received the Musicianship Award for the most outstanding musician upon graduation. After graduating in 2018, Joseph started his Masters in Viola Performance and String Pedagogy at the University of Louisville, Kentucky, studying with Prof. Brittany MacWilliams and Suzuki training with Dr. Terry Durbin, graduating in 2020. At UofL, Joseph received the E.M. Aldrich Scholarship in his first year and in his second year, received the viola graduate string quartet position. As a GTA at UofL, Joseph taught private secondary viola lessons, coached undergraduate chamber music, co-taught string methods, coached for the UofL String Academy, and worked as the administrative assistant for the UofL String Academy. He has played viola for ten years and taken lessons on viola for seven of those ten years. He has performed in masterclasses for Molly Carr, Hillary Herndon, and Todd Phillips.

As a musician, Joseph enjoys playing chamber music. He has had the privilege of performing in chamber music groups throughout much of his undergraduate and graduate degrees. In his first year at UofL, his string quartet placed third in the Macauley Competition. Throughthis, he had the opportunity to perform with his quartet for the WUOL-FM. As a quartet, they also received a full scholarship to attend the Techne Music Festival in Bethlehem Pennsylvania in 2019.

In his second year at UofL, he played in the graduate string quartet. This quartet performed for different school functions. The quartet performed for a presentation by Rob Kapilow at UofL and for The Violins of Hope project in Louisville.

As a teacher, Joseph is known for his hard work ethic, caring spirit, and analytical mind. He loves to teach private violin and viola lessons and seeks to craft lessons that are geared for each student. He believes each student has potential and should be taught to express their own thoughts and ideas through music. Besides teaching, Joseph also serves as co-viola principal for the Kettle Moraine Symphony.

Outside of music, Joseph loves reading, skate skiing, hiking, spending time with family, cooking, and eating ice cream and chocolate. He actively serves as the music pastor for First Baptist Church of Hartford, Wisconsin, where he leads music and directs the choir.
