Dyane P. Rogelstad
Piano, Suzuki Early Childhood Education Teacher, Parent
Dyane Protzmann Rogelstad is a lifetime Suzuki piano student and has been teaching since she was a teenager, starting her career under the supervision of her mother, Robyn Protzmann. She completed her long-term Suzuki Piano teacher training certification in residence in San Diego with Teacher Trainer Doris Koppelman.
Dyane writes:
Mom first learned of the Suzuki method when I was age six after I had already been studying music for almost three years. The Suzuki recordings (on LP records) immediately became a daily part of my world. I was Mom’s first official Suzuki student. We attended the first west coast Suzuki Institute in San Diego, California where I had my first of many Master Class lessons with Matsumoto Talent Education Institute Director Haruko Kataoka.
Mom started to include me in her teaching studio program as a co-teacher when I was 13 years of age, working with her students on reading and music theory games. During those same years my teacher, Doris Koppelman, mentored me through the advanced Suzuki piano repertoire, providing many opportunities for successful performances in local competitions such as Bach Festival and Sonatina Festival, National Guild and Music Teachers Association Certificate of Merit auditions, scholarship competitions, and statewide competitions.
During those formative years, I also discovered my love of accompanying and collaborating with instrumentalists and vocalists. I still perform regularly and look forward to our studio’s annual duet concert.
I started my formal Suzuki Piano Teacher Training after I became a young Mom in the late 1980’s, and spent many years working with Doris at her studio. I even had the honor of becoming a summer coach and mentor for her students when she was traveling and teaching at Suzuki Institutes around the world.
Raising my three children with the support of the Suzuki method has given me first-hand experience with being a Suzuki parent. Most parents agree that we learn so much from our children through the journey of musical studies. Characters are built. Fun, creative musical memories are celebrated. The daily process of overcoming challenges and hurdles is always balanced with daily moments of success. Our musical journey has created family memories that are beyond measure.
Now, I have grandchildren in my family! We choose to meet together weekly online to sing and make music, supported by the Suzuki Early Childhood Curriculum guidelines.
More recently, I have enjoyed the opportunity to review and expand my Suzuki certifications by participating in online classes provided by The Suzuki Association of the Americas. This is an exciting step that enables Suzuki teachers of all instruments to connect with one another and to collaborate globally.”
Pandemic News: Dyane’s teaching methods and approaches have evolved in the past two years, due to everyone’s forced entry into the world of online musical studies. Dyane has successfully adapted her teaching style and methods which have proven to be successful from Pre-Twinklers all the way through the Advanced level curriculum. Her students have shown remarkable progress—measurable growth, independence, and creativity—as a significant successful outcome of the online lesson format.
Dyane welcomes inquiries, conversation, exploration, coaching, or mentoring. Perhaps you are a seeker just needing a brief word of encouragement or a suggestion for how to find a teacher. Dyane is genuinely grateful for all that the worldwide pandemic has taught her and is eager to share what she learned.
