Violin, Viola Teacher
Carrie VanSlyke is a versatile classical musician, adept at performing both within symphony orchestras and alongside some of the world’s top musical acts. Carrie has graced stages worldwide, from the Sydney Opera House to Cincinnati’s Music Hall. She has spent several summers performing in both the Aspen and Banff Music Festivals. Since 2014, she has been a regular performer with Symphony Nova Scotia and has collaborated with popular artists such as Rod Stewart, Nelly Furtado, Weezer, and Josh Ross.
In 2024, after over a decade in Nova Scotia, Carrie relocated to Nashville with her family. Carrie holds degrees in Viola Performance from the College Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati and McGill University. Outside of music, she enjoys hiking, baking, reading, and biking with her husband Jeremy and their two young sons.
Since 2012, Carrie VanSlyke has enjoyed teaching violin and viola to both children and adults. Teaching in Halifax, Nova Scotia has not only allowed her to use her Suzuki training to teach classical repertoire but has also given her the opportunity to introduce fiddling to her students. She is experienced in teaching private lessons, group lessons, and in conducting both beginner and youth orchestras. She has worked for the Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts, the Scotia Suzuki School of Music, hosted youth orchestras from America, co-hosted the Nova Scotia Suzuki Institute, and most recently she has run a private strings studio from her home.
Beginning September 2024, she and her family will move to Nashville, Tennessee where she will have a private strings studio in her home. Carrie enjoys the challenge of creating an individual program for each student. Her training at the College Conservatory of Music of the University of Cincinnati and the Schulich School of Music of McGill University and her professional experiences have given her the knowledge to understand what is required for excellence in string training. Her extensive Suzuki training also enables her to help her students build confidence and passion as they enjoy becoming successful in their musical pursuits. Her students have won numerous gold medals for the highest achievements in the Royal Conservatory of Music exams.
