Dr. Andrew Marino

Guitarist and teacher Andrew Marino has performed throughout the East coast and beyond in dynamic chamber groups and as a soloist. Recent solo performances include SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music, Cohen-Davison Family Theatre at the Peabody Conservatory, The Walters Art Museum, Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Baltimore, as well as St. Paul’s Cathedral and Villa Maria College of Buffalo, NY. He has performed in chamber groups for the Union Square Chamber Music Series, Sowebo Music and Arts Festival, the H.L. Mencken House in Baltimore, MD, as well as at The International Day of Latin and Iberian Art Song, The Mainstay in Rock Hall, MD, the Guitar Foundation of America symposium in New York, First Christian Church in Baltimore with the Baltimore Musicales, and the Classical Guitar Society of Upstate New York in Oswego among others. Andrew is a prizewinner in several competitions, including Appalachian State University’s GuitarFest Competition, the Crane School of Music’s Chamber Music Competition, and was a semi-finalist in the 2014 Philadelphia Classical Guitar Competition. Through his dedication to excellence in performing he has been selected to perform in past master classes with prominent guitarists Benjamin Verdery, Johannes Möller, Stephen Aron, Stanley Yates, and Jason Vieaux. He is also an avid researcher and has recently presented lectures at SUNY Potsdam and Peabody Conservatory on the shift from musical exoticism to realism regarding Middle Eastern influence on guitar repertoire titled Changing Viewpoints: The Evolution of Middle-Eastern Style Influence on Guitar Works from the Nineteenth Century to Present-day.

Andrew is an active teacher and is currently on the faculty of Hoff-Barthelson Music School where he teaches elementary, upper elementary, and high school guitar classes as well as applied guitar lessons. He has been a faculty member of both the International School of Music and Cockeysville Music Education Center in Maryland. Through both faculty positions he has taught lessons in applied guitar, class guitar, and music theory. His teaching focuses on classical technique, note reading, rhythm comprehension, and repertoire development. His students have performed regularly in biannual recitals held at American University in Washington, D.C., and at Towson Unitarian Universalist Church in Towson, MD. Several of his students have been accepted to university guitar programs. In addition to his studio teaching, Andrew has taught the Guitar Methods course at the Peabody Conservatory. He successfully led mid-sized classes of undergraduate and graduate conservatory students in learning essential guitar techniques. This class is focused not only on learning to play the guitar, but on training students to effectively teach guitar in classroom settings. He has also taught group guitar and individual guitar lessons to students at Henderson Hopkins elementary school in Baltimore through the Peabody Preparatory Guitar department.

Andrew holds the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in Guitar Performance from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University where he studied with renowned guitarist and pedagogue Julian Gray. He also holds the degree of Master of Music in Guitar Performance and Pedagogy from the Peabody Institute. While a student at Peabody, Andrew was awarded a full assistantship in Music Education. After receiving several scholarships to attend the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam he graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Music degree in Guitar Performance. He studied with Dr. Douglas Rubio at SUNY Potsdam. Andrew began his guitar studies in Buffalo, NY through lessons with Jeremy Sparks of the Buffalo Guitar Quartet with whom he continued his studies while attending Villa Maria College.
