Andrea Kleesattel

With over 15 years of teaching experience, Dr. Andrea Kleesattel is highly regarded as a kind and creative educator. Her teaching style and focus is informed by years as a professional orchestral and chamber musician and her diverse pedagogical interests.

Dr. Kleesattel is a former member of the Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra (Lexington, KY), the Madison Symphony and Opera Orchestras (Madison, WI), the Hyogo Performing Arts Centre Orchestra (Nishinomiya, Japan), and the Spectrum Symphony Orchestra (New York, NY). She has also performed as a guest with the London Symphonia (London, Ontario) and the Magisterra Soloists (London, Ontario). An avid chamber musician, she is a former member of the Niles, Hunt, and Kaleidoscope String Quartets, and winner of the MacCauley Chamber Music Competition. As a concerto competition winner, she performed the Dvorak Cello Concerto with the University of Kentucky Symphony Orchestra.

In addition to her years of private studio teaching, Dr. Kleesattel teaches group cello, movement, and musicianship classes. She has been on faculty at the School for Strings (New York, NY) Lucy Moses School (New York, NY), Suzuki Music Schools (Westport, CT), Opportunity Music Project (New York, NY), Harmony Program (New York, NY), University of Kentucky String Project (Lexington, KY), and Community Music Lessons (Madison, WI). During summers she has been on faculty at the White Mountain Suzuki Workshop, Moravian Suzuki Workshop, Suzuki Music Schools of Westport, and the Opportunity Music Project Summer Program. Additionally she has been a guest clinician at the Kodaly Summer Certification Program at Western University (London, Ontario) and the Norwalk County CelloFest (Norwalk, CT). 

Throughout her studies and professional activities, Dr. Kleesattel has explored the relationship of the mind and body to musical practice and pedagogy. Her doctoral dissertation explores ways of applying somatic (body) practices to cello playing and teaching. Her interests have expanded to include Dalcroze pedagogy which she has studied in New York City and Toronto, Canada. She is also a martial artist.

She has returned to her Midwestern roots after living in Japan and New York City and currently resides in Bloomington, IN with her partner and son.
