Amy Mathis graduated from Omega Christian Academy and then went on to receive a violin performance degree, magna cum laude, from Wichita State University, Wichita Kansas. While in Wichita she performed with the Wichita Symphony, Wichita Grand Opera and has been a guest with many other orchestras including The River Cities Symphony in West Virginia and the Midwest Band and Orchestra Convention in Chicago. She formed, managed and played in The Grace Quartet in Wichita. Amy attended the month long Master Works Christian Performing Arts Festival for three summers during her undergraduate studies. Since moving to Houston in 2003, she has played with the University of Houston Orchestra, the Houston Civic Symphony, the Fort Bend Theatre and is a performer with various chamber groups around the Houston area.
Amy’s teaching experience includes Wichita Collegiate School, Central Christian Academy, and Blessed Sacrament School. She has been teaching both group and private lessons for over 25 years. Her students perform for the local community through concerts, recitals, All-Region orchestras, Solo and Ensemble competitions, as well as the Houston Youth Symphony. She was awarded the Music Teachers National Association Star Award and is a member of American String Teachers Association, Texas Music Educators Association, and the Suzuki Association of the Americas. She has served as President of the Southeast Texas Suzuki Association. Amy completed Suzuki violin training through book 10 and is a certified Suzuki instructor. She also has training in Suzuki Early Childhood Education, Music Mind Games and Pattern Play For Strings. She and her husband, James, and their three children, Emily, Landon, and Jackson reside in Sugar Land, Texas where she maintains an active private studio in her home.
