Viva México! Viva Suzuki Voice! 12th International Songs for Sharing Workshop

Con corazones desbordados nos reunirnos en el histórico Castillo de Chapultepec y cantamos juntos en el concierto de clausura del 12vo Encuentro Internacional ‘Canciones para compartir’ de Voz Suzuki en la ciudad de México el pasado mes de Abril. Desde el 30 de Marzo al 5 de Abril nuestros días se llenaron de alegría, de canto y de compartir con otros nuestras más diversas vivencias  y culturas en el espíritu Suzuki. El profesor de Voz Suzuki Aldo Guerrero Moreno, sus familias de Voz Suzuki y las familias de su Coral Ensamble organizaron el evento, apoyados por la Asociación Mexicana del Método Suzuki.

Los profesores y niños participantes provenían de México, Australia, Argentina, Finlandia y de Estados Unidos, con estudiantes en un rango de edad desde bebés hasta más de 20 años. La semana estuvo llena de actividades variadas centradas en el espíritu Suzuki de la alegría y el compartir. Compartimos nuestras culturas, nuestro canto y nuestras lenguas mientras llenamos nuestros corazones con cálidas melodías que permanecerán por siempre.

Katrina Pezzimenti (Asociación Suzuki Europea y la Asociación Pan-Pacífico Suzuki Entrenador Maestro de Australia) y Amelia Seyssel (ESA-acreditado de Voz Suzuki Profesor de New York) estuvieron a cargo de las clases individuales, grupales y clases maestras para alumnos de Voz Suzuki durante la semana mientras que Analía Capponi-Savolainen (ESA Entrenador Maestro de Argentina y Finlandia) condujo el curso de capacitación de UNIDAD 1 de SAA (parte 1) para los cuatro nuevos profesores de Voz Suzuki  aceptados en la capacitación.

Aunque no presente, la  fundadora del Programa de Voz Suzuki, la Dr. Päivi Kukkamäki fue una parte imborrable de la trama de todo lo que se alcanzó esa semana y estuvo muy presente en la mente de todos.

Encuentros ‘Canciones para compartir’: su Espíritu y Herencia

Los Encuentros ‘Canciones para compartir’ surgieron de la idea de tener eventos especiales para los alumnos y profesores de Voz Suzuki en los cuales puedan “compartir” su canto, canciones y antecedentes culturales, conocerse unos a otros y construir comunidad. Hemos tenido doce Encuentros ‘Canciones para compartir’ organizados en distintos continentes desde 1999. El Encuentro desarrollado este año en la ciudad de México fue un evento de los más esperado ya que fue la segunda vez que este tipo de Encuentro se realizó en el continente Americano, tanto en Norte como en Sudamérica – el primero se llevó a cabo en Argentina en 2009. También, esta vez fue la primera vez que la capacitación de profesores se condujo completamente en español! En Julio de 2016, el Encuentro ‘Canciones para compartir’ se desarrollará nuevamente en América y por primera vez en Estados Unidos – en Poughkeepsie, New York.

En los Encuentros ‘Canciones para compartir’ a menudo hasta los niños más pequeños aprenden a cantar canciones básicas en más de un idioma. Compartiendo de esta manera con los otros desde tan temprana edad ejemplifica de una manera muy especial, las ideas a largo plazo del Método Suzuki. Los Encuentros ‘Canciones para compartir’ son una forma con la que tratamos de cumplir el sueño del Dr. y la Señora Suzuki, quienes estuvieron íntimamente involucrados en los años tempranos del desarrollo del Programa de Voz Suzuki. 

“El 12vo Encuentro ‘Canciones para compartir’ en México fue una maravillosa combinación de canto, enseñanzas y compartir. Tuvimos conciertos emocionantes en lugares históricos y clases inspiradoras (tanto grupales como individuales) con alumnos entusiastas. El compartir la cultura a través de la música fue continuar el deseo que el Dr. Suzuki tuvo en vida y que se hizo realidad esta semana. Nuevos profesores de México comenzaron su capacitación de Voz Suzuki y participaron alumnos y profesores de México, Estados Unidos, Argentina, Finlandia y Australia. He estado en muchos Encuentros ‘Canciones para compartir’ pero este nos introdujo a muchas facetas de la vida Mexicana con el verdadero espíritu Suzuki. El profesor de Voz Suzuki, Aldo Guerrero, organizó una semana fabulosa de canto y sus familias Suzuki y Coro (Coro Ensamble) [fueron] extremadamente generosos. Mi hija, Lucinda (de 14 años de edad) participó y tuvo la posibilidad de presentarse en público con los alumnos Mexicanos después de aprender la danza Mexicana “danza del sombrero” en la clase de danzas folklóricas! ‘Canciones para compartir’ es único para Voz Suzuki y nos da a todos la posibilidad de aprender acerca de la cultura de cada uno de los otros a través de canciones y cantando juntos.”  Katrina Pezzimenti—Profesora Capacitadora de Voz Suzuki PPSA, ESA

Un Encuentro ‘Canciones para compartir’ ofrece, desde la perspectiva del niño, una experiencia única en una gran dinámica cultural. Desde el comienzo de la semana los niños se ven inmersos en una experiencia musical que tanto los estimula como inspira. Niños y bebés participan con sus padres y los niños más grandes forman nuevas amistades, no solo con otros alumnos sino también con profesores participantes. El espíritu de camaradería engendrado por esta inmersión multi-cultural total es una experiencia increíble de enriquecimiento para todos.

Los niños en el ‘Canciones para compartir’ de la ciudad de México inmediatamente se involucraron en la preparación rápida de las múltiples actuaciones en un ensamble multi-cultural, multi-lingüístico y multi-edad. Aún los alumnos más iniciales tuvieron su lugar en el Encuentro así como música para compartir y cantar. Quienes sabían la música la cantaban, y quienes no sabían la música la aprendían más rápido de lo que uno podría imaginarse para disfrutar de la música junto a los demás! Una prueba del gozo inherente y de la increíble vitalidad de la motivación de estos eventos se demostró cuando un pequeño grupo de alumnos paseaba por las ruinas de la Pirámide del Sol y espontánea y felizmente empezaron a cantar una canción en Latin que recién habían aprendido la tarde anterior: “Jubilate!” (Regocijo!).

Nuestra Experiencia en México: una semana de cantar y compartir con amor

“Voz Suzuki México fue una experiencia cultural rica para estudiantes y profesores, apoyados por la cálida hospitalidad y el Espíritu Suzuki de las familias locales Mexicanas. El Encuentro fue inspirador y una oportunidad valiosa para los profesores de alrededor del mundo para conectarse y fortalecer nuestra comunidad global de Voz Suzuki. Estamos esperando mucho los próximos Encuentros ‘Canciones para compartir’ en USA (2016) y Finlandia (2018).”   Penny Adeney – Profesora de Voz Suzuki de Australia

La ceremonia de apertura llevada a cabo en el exquisito e histórico Casino Español cerca de Zócalo de la ciudad de México, o centro de la ciudad, fue un anticipo de los verdaderamente maravillosos conciertos y eventos de la semana que estaba comenzando. Después de una maravillosa actuación del Coral Ensamble, de algunas canciones grupales de nuestros participantes de Voz Suzuki, de solos de la alumna avanzada Lucinda Pezzimenti (Australia) y del profesor en capacitación Mexicano, Victor Luna Guarneros, nos vimos sorprendidos y encantados por la intervención del magnífico ensamble Mariachi Brindis. El estilo de música de Mariachi es único de México y fue una alegría escucharlo tan bien tocado.

La presentación de powerpoint de la Dr. Päivi Kukkamäki acerca del Programa de Voz Suzuki también se presentó en la ceremonia de apertura. Dr. Kukkamäki envió un presente muy especial para cada profesor y para el Dr. Gabriel Pliego, presidente de la Asociación Mexicana del Método Suzuki, el llamado ‘Shikishi’ del Dr. Suzuki, quien escribió con su caligrafía personal: “Deseo de un bello sonido, un bello corazón” – un presente particularmente conmovedor que será atesorado por todos en los años futuros.

En la siguiente tardecita, como parte del concierto ‘Canciones para compartir’, aprendimos a apreciar más profundamente el “México colorido” ante la presentación del estilo musical Huasteco interpretado por un grupo formado por una gran familia, integrado por abuelos y hasta nietos. Después y siguiendo con la presentación de México en esta ‘Presentación de los países’, se destacó otro estilo musical nativo proveniente de la Península de Yucatán.

En nuestras tradicionales ‘Presentaciones de los países’ de Voz Suzuki cada país participante comparte algo especial acerca de su país y su cultura. Los países que estuvieron representados durante el evento de 2015 fueron Finlandia, Argentina, Estados Unidos, Australia y México. En turnos, cada país compartió algunos hechos interesantes acerca de su país de pertenencia así como también algunas obras musicales. Las canciones, las danzas y los trajes típicos de alrededor del mundo nos entretuvieron. En algunos casos fuimos invitados a participar cantando y bailando, y finalmente nuestros horizontes culturales y musicales se ampliaron maravillosamente. Una de las cosas maravillosas acerca de los encuentros ‘Canciones para compartir’ es el descubrimiento inevitable de la apreciación cada vez más profunda del tapiz cultural de nuestra existencia humana.

En los eventos ‘Canciones para compartir’, el compartir va más allá de los niños compartiendo con niños. Al participar de lleno en las actividades y el canto, los profesores de Voz Suzuki que participan actúan como modelos para los alumnos, ya que demuestran activamente cómo el amor Suzuki por aprender y el deseo constante de ir buscando la excelencia puede continuar durante toda la vida de una persona. Los profesores se benefician mucho al participar también. Desde la perspectiva del profesor, una cosa es ponerse al “nivel del niño” en el contexto de su estudio, como profesor respetado. Y otra experiencia distinta es adentrarse verdaderamente en  uno mismo para sumergirse en el entorno del niño, participando juntos y cantando juntos alegremente las canciones desde las simples a las más complejas, y creando ensambles multi-generacionales y multi-niveles de gran alegría y belleza. El nivel de verdadera amistad y respeto mutuo manifestado por parte de profesores, estudiantes y familias por igual hacia el final del Encuentro ‘Canciones para compartir’ es una de las partes más destacadas de toda la experiencia.

“El ‘Canciones para compartir’ 2015 en México fue una experiencia fantástica para mi. Fue una oportunidad para encontrarme con otros profesores Suzuki de alrededor del mundo; para aprender acerca de la música, la danza y para vislumbrar la historia cultural de México; ver lugares hermosos y sorprendentes como las ruinas pre-Aztecas o las Iglesias y edificios centenarios. La alegría de todos haciendo música juntos fue muy inspiradora. Durante una de las tantas presentaciones durante la semana, alguien dijo que lo mejor de México es la gente. Estoy de acuerdo! El cuarto día del evento, los participantes abordaron un autobús charter y viajaron fuera del Distrito Federal (ciudad capital) a la zona arqueológica de Teotihuacan, más conocida por los turistas como el lugar donde se encuentra la Pirámide del Sol, de un tamaño similar al de la gran pirámide de Giza en Egipto. A diferencia de las pirámides Egipcias, las pirámides Mexicanas son pensadas para escalar y nuestra tropa de Voz Suzuki desafió la extraña sensación de altitud para admirar la vista desde la cima. La ciudad de México está a 7400 pies (2250 metros). Después de esa excursión, nuestros anfitriones Mexicanos nos deleitaron aún más al ofrecernos una auténtica y casera muestra de cocina Mexicana en una cena al aire libre realizada en un pequeño pueblo. Después de la cena hubo piñata para los niños y una posterior carrera al autobus charter durante una repentina tormenta de lluvia torrencial.

Una cálida bienvenida a los nuevos profesores Mexicanos en capacitación!

Este maravilloso evento ‘Canciones para compartir’ fue también una excelente oportunidad para los nuevos profesores Latinoamericanos para comenzar su capacitación de Voz Suzuki UNIDAD 1 de SAA con la profesora capacitadora Analía Capponi-Savolainen. Esta fue la primera vez desde 2009 que la UNIDAD 1 de SAA de capacitación de profesores de Voz Suzuki se ofreció en América Latina y la primera vez que se ofreció en idioma Español. Felicitaciones a Eugenia Ramirez, Carolina Lara Tapia, Tania Hernandez Cansedo y Victor Luna Guarneros!  México ha ganado cuatro profesores de Voz Suzuki en capacitación de una excelente trayectoria y el Programa mundial de Voz Suzuki se enriquece con su presencia.

Los nuevos profesores en capacitación estuvieron felices de participar en este evento que les ofreció la posibilidad de comenzar la capacitación de profesores de Voz Suzuki y de sentirse parte de esta comunidad internacional desde el principio.

En todos los casos, los profesores nuevos se sintieron felices al identificarse con el Programa de Voz Suzuki y sus objetivos. Mostraron un gran entusiasmo y su motivación y emoción creció con el pasar de los días. Se fueron del Encuentro habiendo ganado conocimientos acerca del Programa de Voz Suzuki pero también se fueron llevando consigo una experiencia significativa acerca de qué es el programa de Voz Suzuki y sintiendo como todos nosotros, que aprendimos, compartimos, crecimos y amamos.

Los eventos ‘Canciones para compartir’ son oportunidades únicas para los alumnos y profesores de Voz Suzuki para experimentar comunidad, para compartir música y cultura, para aprender sobre el otro y para aprender del otro. Es la oportunidad de compartir “quien sos” y de dejar a los otros ser “quienes son” mientras se construye la comprensión mutua y las relaciones interpersonales. Todos nosotros traemos distintas historias y culturas, hemos vivido diferentes experiencias en la vida, hasta podríamos no hablar un idioma común – pero en este tipo de eventos, la alegría de cantar nos hace uno en la música y a través de la música. El significado de la experiencia es tan profundo y especial que no puede explicarse con palabras. Crecemos juntos, no sólo individualmente pero también socialmente y como comunidad. El poder de la música y el canto para cambiar el mundo es el legado del Dr. Suzuki y con cada evento ‘Canciones para compartir’ reafirmamos nuestro compromiso con ese maravilloso legado.

12th International Songs for Sharing Workshop

Our hearts were full to overflowing as we came together in the historic Castillo de Chapultepec and sang together the Closing Concert of the 12th International Songs for Sharing Suzuki Voice Workshop in Mexico City last April. From March 30 to April 5, our days were full of joy, singing and sharing with each other in the Suzuki spirit our diverse backgrounds and cultures. Suzuki Voice teacher Aldo Guerrero Moreno, his Suzuki Voice families and the families of his Coral Ensamble hosted the occasion, supported by the Asociación Mexicana del Método Suzuki.

Participating teachers and children attended from Mexico, Australia, Argentina, Finland and the United States, with students ranging in age from infants to more than twenty years old. The week was filled with a variety of activities centered in the Suzuki spirit of joy and sharing. We shared our cultures, our singing, and our languages while filling our hearts with warm memories that will last a lifetime.

Katrina Pezzimenti (European Suzuki Association and Pan-Pacific Suzuki Association Teacher Trainer from Australia) and Amelia Seyssel (ESA-Accredited Suzuki Voice Teacher from New York) taught individual, group and master class lessons for Suzuki Voice students throughout the week while Analía Capponi-Savolainen (ESA Teacher Trainer from Argentina and Finland) conducted the SAA Unit One training for the four new Suzuki Voice teacher trainees.

Although not present, our Suzuki Voice Founder Dr. Päivi Kukkamäki was an indelible part of the fabric of everything that was accomplished that week and was very present in everyone’s minds.

I am very proud of the teamwork that the Suzuki Voice Teachers and Teacher Trainers were doing during the 12th ‘Songs for Sharing’ Suzuki Voice Workshop. Songs for Sharing Workshop: Its Spirit and Heritage

Songs for Sharing workshops arose from the idea of having special Suzuki Voice events for students and teachers to share their singing, songs and cultural background, to get to know each other and to build community. There have been twelve Songs for Sharing workshops organized in different continents since 1999. The Mexico City workshop this year was only the second time that Songs for Sharing has taken place in the Americas—the first was held in Argentina in 2009. It was also the first time that teacher training was conducted entirely in the Spanish language! In July 2016, Songs for Sharing will be held again in the Americas in Poughkeepsie, New York.

At Songs for Sharing events, even the youngest children often learn to sing beginning songs in more than one language. Sharing with each other in this way from such a young age exemplifies the long-held ideals of the Suzuki method. Songs for Sharing workshops are one way in which we try to fulfill the dream of Dr. and Mrs. Suzuki, who were both intimately involved in the early development years of the Suzuki Voice Program.

“The 12th ‘Songs for Sharing Workshop’ in Mexico was a wonderful combination of singing, teaching and sharing. We had exciting concerts in beautiful historical venues and inspiring lessons (both group and individual) with enthusiastic students. The sharing of cultures through music was a continuing wish of Dr. Suzuki throughout his life and it was achieved this week. New teachers from Mexico began their Suzuki Voice training and teachers and students participated from Mexico, the US, Argentina, Finland and Australia. I have been to many Songs for Sharing Workshops but this one introduced us to so many facets of Mexican life in the true Suzuki spirit. Suzuki Voice teacher Aldo Guerrero organized a great week of singing and his Suzuki families and Choir (Coral Ensamble) [were] very overwhelmingly generous. From the child’s perspective, a ‘Songs for Sharing’ workshop offers a unique experience into a wider cultural dynamic. From the very beginning of the week they are immersed in a musical experience that both challenges and inspires them. Toddlers and infants join with their parents and older children form new friendships, not only with other students but also with the participating teachers. The spirit of camaraderie engendered by this total multi-cultural immersion is an incredibly enriching experience for all.

Children at the Mexico City Songs for Sharing immediately began preparing for multiple performances within a multi-cultural, multi-linguistic and multi-age ensemble. There was a place for even the very beginning students and music to share and perform. Whoever knew the music sang the music, and those who didn’t know the music learned it more quickly than one can imagine in order to join the fun! Proof of the inherent joy and incredible motivational vitality of these events was demonstrated by a small group of students strolling past the ruins of the Pyramid of the Sun happily and spontaneously singing a song in Latin that they had just learned the evening before:  “Jubilate!” (Rejoice!) The spirit of camaraderie engendered by this total multi-cultural immersion is an incredibly enriching experience for all.

Our Mexican Experience: A Week of Singing and Sharing with Love

“Suzuki Voice Mexico presented a rich cultural experience for students and teachers, supported by the warm hospitality and Suzuki spirit shown by the local Mexican families. The workshop was inspiring and a valuable opportunity for teachers from around the world to connect and strengthen our global Suzuki Voice community. The opening ceremonies at the exquisite and historic Casino Español near Mexico City’s Zócalo, or city center, was but a foretaste of the truly wonderful concerts and events of the week to come. Following a wonderful performance by the Coral Ensamble, some group singing by our Suzuki Voice participants, solos by advanced student Lucinda Pezzimenti (Australia) and Mexican teacher trainee Victor Luna Guarneros, we were delighted and surprised to be entertained by the superb Mariachi ensemble Brindis. Mariachi music style is unique to Mexico and it was a joy to hear it so well performed.

The opening ceremonies also included Dr. Kukkamäki’s PowerPoint presentation on the Suzuki Voice. As a special gift, Dr. Kukkamäki gave to each teacher and to Dr. Gabriel Pliego, president of the Mexican Suzuki Association, Dr. Suzuki’s shikishi with his personal calligraphy reading: “Wish for Beautiful Tone Beautiful Heart”— a particularly touching gift that will be treasured by all in years to come.

The following evening, as part of our Songs for Sharing concert, our musical appreciation of colorful Mexico was enhanced further by a presentation of the Huasteco music style performed by a family group, grandparents through grandchildren. Later, yet another native musical style from the Yucatan peninsula was highlighted during the focus of Mexico’s Country Presentation.  

At our traditional Suzuki Voice Country Presentations, each participating country shares something special about their country and their culture as well as some musical item. Represented during this 2015 event were Finland, Argentina, the United States, Australia, and Mexico. Songs, dances and costumes from around the globe entertained us. In some cases we were invited to participate in the singing and dancing, and ultimately our cultural and musical horizons were delightfully broadened. One of the wonderful things about these workshops is the inevitable discovery of an ever deeper appreciation for the cultural tapestry that is our human existence.

At Songs for Sharing events, sharing also goes beyond children sharing with children. By fully participating in the activities and the singing, attending Suzuki Voice teachers act as models to the students, actively demonstrating how the Suzuki love of learning and ongoing desire for excellence can continue throughout one’s lifetime. Teachers benefit greatly by this participation as well. It is one thing for a teacher to bring his or her self to the child’s level in their own teaching studio, as the respected teacher. It is another experience entirely to truly immerse yourself in the child’s environment, joining together joyfully in singing the songs, simple to advanced, and creating multi-generational and multi-level “ensembles” of great joy and beauty. The level of true friendship and respect mutually exhibited by teachers, students and families alike by the end of the Songs for Sharing workshop week is one of the highlights of the entire experience.

On the fourth day of the event, participants boarded a chartered bus and traveled outside the Federal (Capital City) District to the archeological zone of Teotihuacan, better known to tourists as the location of the Pyramid of the Sun, as sizeable as the great pyramid at Giza in Egypt. Unlike the Egyptian pyramids, Mexican pyramids are meant to be climbed, and our Suzuki Voice troupe braved the rarefied high-altitude air to take in the view from the top (Mexico City is at 7400 feet). Following that excursion, our Mexican hosts delighted us further by serving us authentic and home-made Mexican cuisine at an open-air dinner in a small town. Dinner was followed by a piñata for the children and a subsequent dash to the chartered bus during a sudden torrential afternoon rain storm.

A Warm Welcome to the New Mexican Teachers-In-Training!

This wonderful Songs for Sharing event was also an excellent opportunity for new Latin American teachers to begin their Suzuki Voice SAA Unit One training with Teacher Trainer Analía Capponi-Savolainen. This was the first time since 2009 that SAA Unit One teacher training in Suzuki Voice had been offered in Latin America and the first time it was offered in the Spanish language. Congratulations to Eugenia Ramirez, Carolina Lara Tapia, Tania Hernandez Canseco and Victor Luna Guarneros! Mexico gained four new Suzuki Voice teachers of excellent background and the worldwide Suzuki Voice program is enriched by their presence.

New teacher trainees were happy to participate in this event which offered them the possibility to start the Suzuki Voice teacher training and to feel part of the world-wide community from the beginning.

In all cases, new teachers were happy to identify themselves with the Suzuki Voice program and its aims. They showed great enthusiasm and their motivation and excitement grew day by day. They left gaining knowledge about the Suzuki Voice Program but they also left gaining a meaningful experience about what the Suzuki Voice Program is, feeling as we all did that we learned, we shared, we grew and we loved.

Songs for Sharing events are unique opportunities for us Suzuki Voice teachers and students to experience community, to share music and culture, to learn about each other and from each other. It is the opportunity to share “who-you-are” and to let the others be “who-they-are” while building mutual understanding and interpersonal relationships. We have different backgrounds and cultures, we have lived different experiences in life, we might not even speak a common language—but in these kinds of events, the happiness of singing makes us one in music and through music. The meaning of the experience is so profound and special that it cannot be explained with words. We grow together, not only individually but also socially and as a community. The power of music and singing to change the world is the legacy of Dr. Suzuki, and with each Songs for Sharing event we reaffirm our commitment to that wonderful legacy.

Amelia Seyssel is an ESA-accredited Suzuki Voice Teacher (Level Five) and holds a master of fine arts in vocal performance and literature from Mills College, California. She is the first Suzuki Voice teacher from the United States to have earned an ESA Diploma (full accreditation) for Suzuki Voice instruction in all five ESA Training Levels (equivalent to SAA Units One through Ten). She has trained most extensively at the Talent Education Institute of Singing in Vantaa, Finland, with Suzuki Voice founder Dr. Päivi Kukkamäki. In the course of her Suzuki Voice teacher training studies, Ms. Seyssel has additionally acquired training and teaching experience in Finland, Australia, Japan, Mexico and the US.

Analía Capponi-Savolainen is a Suzuki Voice Teacher Trainer of the ESA and has acted as a visiting teacher trainer for the SAA. She is a fully accredited Suzuki Voice Teacher (Level Five) and the Suzuki Voice Program Assistant in Latin America. She is also the organizer of the 7th Suzuki Voice International Workshop—the first such workshop held in the Americas. Analía has been teaching the Suzuki Voice program to babies, children and adults of different nationalities for about fifteen years. She is currently teaching at her studio in Helsinki and conducting special singing courses and master classes for students and teachers in La Plata, Argentina. In addition, Analía is doing her doctoral studies at the Sibelius Academy in Finland with a dissertation about singing learning and development in early childhood.
