Karla Berglund Hughes’ musical training began early with Elizabeth & Harlow Mills, the founders of the Pasadena Suzuki Music Program. She extended her musical education with Dr. David Stockhammer of the Los Angeles Philharmonic while earning her Bachelors of Music Degree in Violin Performance from California State University, at Northridge. She has an extensive professional symphony orchestra background and her chamber music appearances have been on live radio and seen on public television broadcasts.
Ms. Hughes is active in leadership seminars, certified courses, and conferences sponsored by the Suzuki Association of the Americas. She is an advocate of the therapeutic qualities of music and her continuing education includes multitudes of music therapy courses, plus client fieldwork. Memberships include the Professional Musicians Association- Local 47, Suzuki Association of the Americas, Suzuki Association of California-Los Angeles Branch, and the American Nyckelharpa Association. In addition, she is an advisory board member of the Verdugo Young Musicians Association, which is based on an El Sistema-like program.
Ms. Hughes is an avid fan of folk music. She loves sharing her Nyckelharpa instrument. Karla also performs chamber music with her husband, Larry Hughes, a professional clarinetist and she creates adapted musical instruments alongside their beautiful, clever daughter, Elina.
