On March 10, 2022 the SAA held its first Community Gathering event. Over 60 people registered and attended. It was the first time many community members had seen each other’s faces and been in the same virtual space in months, if not years.

Along with getting to know Executive Director Angelica Cortez and hearing a few of her visions for the future, we shared words about what we were like at age 12, how we chose our current instruments, and recent moments of delight with our students.
We were grateful for all the attendees and to those who submitted questions. This Community Gathering was an important first step to create a consistent channel of accessible and reliable communication between leadership and membership. We learned many things including there can be many technical issues if the meeting is accessed through Eventbrite. Future meetings will be directly accessed through Zoom. In this first session, a few submitted questions were answered broadly, but all questions were received by the SAA Communication Team. The processes are being constructed now to shuttle questions to the right source, or to prepare the answers to be shared at the next Community Gathering event.

Angelica questions and answers
Q: What are 3 things that you envision for the future of SAA?
A: First and foremost I’m most excited about open communication.
The next priority is about equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging.
The third thing is structure and systems.
And the last thing I’ll tag on to that answer is that none of those things are to put blame or even criticize what has happened thus far. There’s so much beauty and so much incredible work that’s happened over the last several years. And so I’ll just say thank you to those of you who have been a part of this organization for as long as you have. I can kind of absorb the history as I’ve been getting bits and pieces from board members, past board members, from various members, through letters, etc. And I just want to make it clear that this organization has done a lot of great work, and I’m here to bridge the past with the future, and really grateful to all of you for building such a beautiful foundation.
Q: What about teacher training in the summer? Will any policies around that be changing?
A: I don’t anticipate very much shifting immediately, especially when we’re talking about the summer, and I also know that a lot of Institute planning has already taken place. We may add one or two things on but we don’t anticipate much shifting in a huge way for this summer.
I’m working closely with my colleagues and we are thinking about putting together a couple of small events the weekend of Memorial Day, which I know would have been a conference for us this year. We’re going to do our best to do some virtual events so that we can gather the community; we’re going to try and host more events like this so that you all have more information on what’s coming down the line. We want to be able to focus really specifically on future training and to please bear with us and keep an eye out for information about all of those events coming up soon.
My goal is that we hold ourselves to change and moving forward as an organization, and also that we’re really stable. We want to bring stability to our organization. I think we’ve been in transition and we’re slowly moving toward stability and sustainability.

We also thank those of you who submitted questions in Spanish, as well; this was an experiment and we’re really happy to hear all the voices.

P: ¿Cuáles son las 3 cosas que imagina para el futuro de la SAA?
R: En primer lugar, lo que más me emociona es la comunicación abierta.
La siguiente prioridad es sobre equidad, diversidad, inclusión y pertenencia.
La tercera cosa es la estructura y los sistemas.
Y lo último que agregaré a esa respuesta es que ninguna de esas cosas es para culpar o incluso criticar lo que ha sucedido hasta ahora. Hay tanta belleza y tanto trabajo increíble que ha sucedido en los últimos años. Así que les daré las gracias a aquellos de ustedes que han sido parte de esta organización durante tanto tiempo.
