Alice Joy Lewis was one of my earliest inspirations. Alice Joy has a very spiritual side to her teaching. Her incredible love for the children, the younger teachers, her own children, and Dr. Suzuki emanated through her to all of us. She gave so much of herself to everyone around her. Alice Joy and Brian came to the Intermountain Suzuki String institute in my earliest years as a director. Brian likely had his first job as a guest artist at our institute. The relationship between Brian and Alice Joy inspired all of us. She is an incredible part of the Suzuki method in the Americas and leaves a great legacy.

I first met Alice Joy in the summer of 1974 when we brought our 3-year-old daughter, Erin, for piano lessons at the Ottawa Suzuki Institute. Our son, Eric, was a year old. Alice Joy had helped us find a small violin for our daughter and assisted in getting the first recordings for her to begin listening. We attended the Ottawa Suzuki Institute every year after that until our four children wer out of high school and began attending college! It was such a highlight for all six of us! I was able to teach for Alice Joy at the Institutes, and we therefore became very close friends. I admired her and learned so much from her about Dr. Suzuki, the Suzuki philosophy, and the art of being a good Suzuki Teacher! She was a dear, dear frined and colleague for all of these past 46 years as we worked and grew together as Suzuki teachers! I am so thankful that we met and had the joy of growing together as Suzuki teachers.
