Kathy Gene Shelhart (of Harrison, NY) died on September 5, 2021.
She was born on October 23, 1951, in Toledo, Ohio, and grew up in Toledo; Dearborn, Michigan; and Watertown, Connecticut, where she graduated high school in 1969. In 1974, Kathy received her Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from the University of Connecticut. She continued her studies at Ithaca College, where she attained her Master’s degree in Music Education in 1981.
Kathy built a 40-year career as a music educator. Her career spanned four countries, with appointments at Victoria Teacher’s College, the American School in Japan, and HC Crittenden Middle School, among others. Kathy studied under Dr. (h.c.) Shinichi Suzuki and was a skilled performer of several instruments.
Kathy adventured throughout Asia, Europe, South America, and New Zealand, where she met her future husband, David Sayers. They relocated to Melbourne, Australia, married (later divorced), and had their first child, Nina. They had their second child, Michael, in Tokyo, Japan before settling in Westchester, NY, where she continued to explore, grow, and support others.
Kathy was predeceased by her parents Robert and Kathryn Shelhart. She is survived by her daughter Nina Sayers; son Michael Sayers; sister Susan Shelhart; brother John Shelhart; and brother Mark Shelhart.
