One of the most common and pernicious criticisms of Suzuki students is that they play like robots. Unfortunately, our common repertoire and the ease and automaticity with which kids can internalize repertoire and technique makes our students especially vulnerable to this phenomenon. One of the most fundamental challenges for a Suzuki teacher and parent is: how do we simultaneously inculcate a natural ease of technique while simultaneously cultivating thoughtful, expressive, spontaneous, and coachable artists?
This talk will offer specific techniques that can be used in practice and lessons to encourage students to interfere with the robot and foster sensitive musicians who are in control of mind, body, and heart.
