The Expanded Suzuki Triangle: Nurturing the Student within the Community
This is a video response to a parent who asked, “Why bother with an institute?” We tried to go back to the basic principles of Suzuki philosophy to explain how events like institutes, group classes, and conference opportunities provide the bridge between the individual lesson and sharing the expressive power of music with a larger community.

Kathleen Schoen earned her undergraduate music degree from the University of B.C., then studied at the University of Toronto, Royal Conservatory of Music, and Banff Centre for the Arts.
She performs on period and modern flutes and recorders. Recent performances have mixed both historical and modern performance practice in arrangements and original compositions.
A Teacher Trainer for the Suzuki Association of the Americas, Kathleen has been invited to programs in Peru, Ecuador, Mexico, United States, Australia and the Netherlands. At home, she teaches at the University of Alberta and her home studio. For more: https://fluteplayer.ca

Thomas Schoen (B. Mus U.B.C) teaches students of all ages and levels from Suzuki Early Childhood Education classes for parents and children (0-3 yrs), to violin and viola students from 4 to adult. Teaching positions include Augustana Faculty of U. of A and privately in his home studio. Mr. Schoen was director of the Alberta Suzuki Summer Institute in Edmonton AB from 2010 to 2021.
Residing in Edmonton, Alberta, Thomas enjoys a busy and varied performing career performing on both modern and baroque violins. He has subbed frequently with the Edmonton Symphony and has performed professionally with orchestras across Canada. He performs regularly throughout Canada with the Schoen Duo, who have been broadcast on the CBC.
Thomas has received a Certificate of Achievement from the Suzuki Association of the Americas (2017) and a Teacher of Distinction award from the Royal Conservatory of Music (2018) in recognition of his teaching.
