The School for Strings, an independent, not-for-profit music school in New York City, offers Long-Term Teacher Training Seminars in violin, cello and piano. The Seminars are organized as two-year courses. In the first year, students meet for weekly two-hour sessions and are assigned to observe lessons and classes. In the second year, in addition to continuing attending sessions, Seminar members become faculty in the School’s Start-Up Program. There, they give individual lessons to the children in the program and rotate leading group-playing classes.
Seminar members who successfully complete the two-year course are registered with SAA as teachers who have fulfilled the Association’s training requirements for Books I through 8 for violin and cello and Books I through 7 for piano. Additionally, The School for Strings issues each graduate an open Letter of Recommendation.
To be eligible to participate in the Seminar, candidates must be able to perform competently repertoire beyond the level of the published Suzuki materials. Admission is based on an audition/interview with the Director of the School.
