AIR RACE 2014: Putting the FUN in fundraising!

Through April 27th, two virtual planes are competing in an event to raise remaining funds for the Latin American Ensemble. Team “EAST” includes all friends who live east of Minneapolis and team “WEST” represents our friends west of Minneapolis. The official dividing line is the Minneapolis longitude: 93º 15′ 49″ W.

This is an incredible opportunity to build a bridge within our vast association that will pay off well into the future. It allows our Latin American students to experience firsthand the richness of our vision-driven work and take home with them high levels of engagement and enthusiasm. Our North American students will have the unique experience of interacting with their peers from Latin America. Spoken language barriers will disappear and music will become the unifying language.

While only one team plane will make it to Minneapolis first, in the end we ALL win by making Suzuki Americas 2014 a reality!

Reaching Out

by Ellen Kogut

Ellen Kogut

Every two years, hundreds of Suzuki teachers descend upon the Hilton Minneapolis for the Suzuki Association of the Americas Conference. The Conference offers presentations, workshops, masterclasses, and performances, as well as the incredible opportunity to connect with colleagues from all over the Americas.

With so many people and so much going on, it’s sometimes easy to feel a bit lost in the crowd. I remember feeling this way at my first Conference! But I also have great memories of other Suzuki teachers reaching out to welcome me.

I remember getting to one morning presentation a few minutes early. As I was sitting down and taking out my notebook, a teacher with short, sandy brown hair sat down next to me. She introduced herself as Tammy Linn. She asked me where I was from and about my students back home. I told her about my background, and learned that she was based in Texas and had attended a number of Conferences in past years. I was struck by Tammy’s openness, her warmth, and her genuine interest in connecting. What a difference her gesture made to me as a young teacher! It still stands out to me as one of my nicest Conference memories.

Wouldn’t it be great if everyone at this year’s Conference had a similar experience? Read More for some ideas for how you can reach others at the upcoming conference!
