Shaping Character From the Start E-News Highlights
Do you ever wonder how early Suzuki’s vision can begin to grow in a child? Is there such a thing as “too young?” Suzuki’s aim was always to create an environment for a child’s character to blossom with beauty, and the Suzuki Early Childhood Education Program (SECE) accomplishes just this from as early as the baby’s first heartbeat. During the early childhood years, birth through age five, every moment is an opportunity for children to learn more about the world around them, to practice social skills, and to gain critical thinking skills and knowledge. And as they begin to learn how to navigate the world around them, these moments provide opportunities for them to grow in character, laying the foundations for them to thrive and develop in all areas of life. SECE focuses on the development of a child’s sensitivity—as a child’s ability to listen, focus, appreciate and understand advances, so does their ability to empathize, express themselves and to serve others. This development also paves the way for musical sensitivity and growth of skills necessary for making music. The video production ”First Character, then Ability” is one of three videos which comprise an SECE series initiated and produced by Wan Tsai Chen, Artistic Director of Suzuki Talent Education Society (STES) of Calgary, Alberta Canada. These video productions (available at www.suzukitalented.org) reflect Wan Tsai Chen’s lifelong passion for the Suzuki philosophy and method and were made possible with the full and continued support of the Suzuki community at STES. STES is among the pioneers of the SECE program and continues to place great focus upon the importance early childhood education. RememberJane Dunbar Midwestern Suzuki families may remember Jane Dunbar and her children from early Suzuki institute years. She was devoted to Suzuki education and provided a much-appreciated service through her graphic design business, Autumn Enterprises, in Farmington Hills, MI. Jane established an SAA Teachers Scholarship in memory of the beloved Suzuki teacher, Joe Cleveland. Each year, following Jane’s request, we are able to award a scholarship in Joe’s memory, to a deserving teacher with a “good sense of humor.” Jane recently passed away at age 82. Read her obituary. |
