SAA Appoints New Executive DirectorAngelica Cortez has been appointed Executive Director of the SAA. An experienced leader in the arts, Ms. Cortez will succeed Interim Acting Director Laura Yasuda and assume responsibilities on January 31, 2022. The Board thanks Ms. Yasuda for her Interim Acting Director service as well as her seven years of experience in multiple areas of office operations. “Our new Executive Director brings a renewed energy and freshness to our organization. Her warmth, skills in communication and active listening, and commitment to education truly stand out and will be a huge asset to the SAA,” says Board Member Bruce Walker. “Furthermore, her dedication to the areas of diversity, equity, inclusion, access, and belonging are notable and I am confident that we will begin to see our organization move in a direction that Dr. Suzuki would entirely approve.” Ms. Cortez brings a wealth of skills to the SAA, including the ability to communicate with Latin American members using conversational Spanish. Suzuki Principles in Action (SPA) focuses upon the art of Suzuki teaching, and is open to those who have registered Unit 1, taught at least one year, and have a current studio. Its cross-instrument format addresses how to teach, not what to teach, and allows for the sharing of ideas among teachers of all Suzuki instruments and specialty areas. As one veteran teacher said, “SPA affirms our beliefs in the Suzuki philosophy and empowers us to continue to grow and be even more productive in our teaching and outreach.” (Betsy Stuen-Walker) New! SPA is available in-person or now online! Current courses include: February 18-19-20 with Nancy Lokken (SAA host) April 1-2-3 with Beth Titterington (SAGA host) More courses coming! Check out further information by visiting: https://suzukiassociation.org/teachers/training/spa/ Please contact the SAA office directly if you are interested in hosting a SPA course, either in person or online.
In collaboration with the University of Tokyo, TERI has published a research paper entitled “Music-Experience-Related and Musical-Error-Dependent Activations in the Brain” in the prestigious UK journal “Cerebral Cortex”. The study shows the effectiveness of the Suzuki Method for the first time using a modern brain science technique (functional MRI). The next deadline for submitting to the ASJ is February 1. We value submissions from any members of our Suzuki community — even, and especially, if you’re “not a writer.” We hope to increase representation in our pages from authors who are diverse in terms of instrumentation, geography, race, ethnicity, gender, ability, age, and more. Manuscript guidelines can be found here:

Read in English | Leer en español | Leia em Português The members of the Latin American Suzuki Associations Committee offer a cordial greeting to all Suzuki communities, as our best wishes for this new year. We also take this moment to share news about the activities that have been carried out in various countries of Latin America. Suzuki Diploma “THE PATH TO EXCELLENCE” The Mexican Association of the Suzuki Method (AMMS) shares the news of the first Suzuki Diploma in Latin America. It is a project of continuous training of teachers, whose objective is to strengthen the Suzuki teaching-learning process and to obtain better results at a musical level for students. Due to the growing need to receive teaching tools and support in the development of classes, AMMS has devised “The Path to Excellence” Diploma for teachers, which will be endorsed by AMMS and registered by the Suzuki Association of the Americas (SAA). The Diploma will be taught by Teacher Trainers from different countries, allowing the sharing of experiences to create the best strategies in music teaching, facilitate the mastery of teaching the Suzuki method and the ability to transmit it, offer a training for teachers allowing them to see the potential of each student, and offer technical tools to develop the skills required through Suzuki Method books. These are the current concerns of AMMS, and now part of the occupations of the AMMS, which is committed to providing continuous training to its members. Together we can reach a “better world through music” Shinichi Suzuki. More information on the page: www.suzukimexico.org If you have questions, send an email to: capacitacion@suzukimexico.org First Virtual Concert “Building Ties”—Argentinian Suzuki Guitar Network The Suzuki Guitar Network of Argentina organized the first concert of guitar students on December 4th of 2021. More than 20 Suzuki guitar teachers introduced their students and had the opportunity to hear the performances of students from various parts of Argentina, some very far away. In this single concert, it was possible to hear the work that teachers have been doing over these years, including the one carried out throughout the pandemic, in a virtual way. It was an experience that made all participants very happy! We reiterate our warmest invitation to all Latin American countries that work with the Suzuki Method to send information about the actions they have been taking (organization of their associations, events, and activities programmed, etc.) to share them in the following posts. This information can be sent to the email: asociacionesamericalatina@gmail.com.
