In this issue: 2014 Conference Wrap-upSuzuki Americas 2014, Photo by Sandra Davis Many thanks to all the volunteers for their countless hours of work that went into the 2014 conference! This exhilarating event was made even more exciting by the presence and performances given by our Latin American colleagues and students. Suzuki Americas 2014 was a highlight of the conference, including activities and performances that brought together students from across North, Central, and South America. The culminating grand concert presented folk songs from various SAA regions in addition to selections from the Suzuki repertoire; it was an inspiring experience for all! Video of the concert is now available on the SAA website for all to view and share:
Look for a full wrap-up of the Conference in the next issue of the American Suzuki Journal. Thank you to all who attended, volunteered, donated, and made this event possible! Suzuki Highlights: Music Village Instrument Donation ProgramWe recently spoke with Lori Richards, Suzuki flute teacher and director of The Music Village, about her project to help Latin American Suzuki programs by donating flutes for their students. It’s been on my heart to help the Suzuki students in Latin America who are in need of flutes since I first heard of the Latin American program through Rebecca Paluzzi at East Tennessee State University. I know how important it is to have a good instrument. I was really blessed as a child to have a wonderful beginner flute, and I’ve always owned high quality instruments. It is my hope that Suzuki teachers and parents will spread the word so that together we can make a difference in the lives of these students. When you purchase any band instrument at www.themusicvillage.net, a portion of each sale goes to acquire flutes at dealer cost for donation to Latin American programs. Kelly Williamson, Suzuki flute teacher trainer, who regularly teaches workshops in South America, explains the need for flutes: All of the Suzuki flute teachers in South America work with children from families of low economic means, and many also work with programs which serve underprivileged kids. A large number of students play on extremely poor-quality flutes, some being shared among as many as five children. A lot of the younger flutists use straight headjoints when they really need curved ones for proper playing position. The teachers in Latin America typically earn very low hourly wages, and are unable to provide instruments or curved headjoints for their students to borrow. Each flute that has been donated over the past ten years has been passed down to many grateful students! Please visit www.themusicvillage.net to add your support and find out more. Digital Downloads of Suzuki RecordingsDigital downloads of Suzuki Method recordings are now available on Amazon and iTunes. Alfred Music Publishing announced in November that Suzuki audio recordings would soon be available for download from sites such as iTunes and Amazon. Most volumes are now available for download and more (including piano) are forthcoming. Summer InstitutesSummer institute season is upon us! Suzuki summer institutes provide an opportunity for Suzuki students to come together and learn from inspirational guest faculty, interact with other Suzuki students, and perform together through a week-long invigorating program. Don’t miss this opportunity for your child!
Teachers, also, are given the opportunity to train with highly skilled Suzuki Teacher Trainers and observe their teaching throughout the week. If you are interested in taking teacher training, be sure to check our requirements for training so that you don’t miss this valuable opportunity!
