Hearts That Sing
Dr. Suzuki encouraged us to devote our efforts to educating children to have beautiful hearts and noble souls. Is there any greater calling than this?
The connections within our Suzuki community give us the resources to make this task easier. The SAA is a community representing great social, economic, and cultural diversity, and yet we all share the common language and love of music. We all have the potential to reach a level of proficiency to be able to share the gift of music with others. It is important to provide children with many opportunities to share these gifts in order to instill within them a nobleness of spirit.
Suzuki Americas 2014 will provide an excellent vehicle for bringing children together to share the beauty in their hearts. At the 2014 SAA Conference, children from all over Latin America will converge in Minneapolis to share their music in a Latin American Ensemble Concert. In addition, they will join forces with children from all over North America to perform music from many cultures. It will be recorded as a webcast so that children from all over the world will be able to play along in a gesture of global solidarity through music. The SAA’s 16th Conference aims to be a high point of inspiration for all participants. Led by a team of more than forty enthusiastic teacher members, this mega-event will be brought to life by the participation of all who come together to learn and share ideas and inspiration. The conference will indeed be “Powered by Community,” and you are a part of the Suzuki Community! Suzuki Principles in Action: Upcoming Courses
Suzuki Principles in Action (SPA) is a two day, cross-instrumental course designed to help teachers incorporate Suzuki’s principles effectively in their teaching. The course focuses on how to teach, not what to teach, allowing the sharing of ideas among all instrument areas. SPA is based on Dr. Suzuki’s belief that knowledge is an important first step, but “knowledge plus 10,000 times” is what produces ability. … Read more

Scholarship Applications Due February 5
Are you a teacher interested in taking SAA training this year, but concerned about the cost? The SAA provides a limited number of scholarships to provide tuition assistance for pedagogy study at approved Summer Institutes, workshops, or through other SAA-approved Teacher Development programs between May 1, 2014 and May 31, 2015.
The deadline for all scholarship applications is February 5.

Review: Violin Lessons!! by Katrin St. Clair
Author and Suzuki violin teacher Katrin St. Clair has just published her first book in a series she is planning about family life in the Suzuki method. Violin Lessons!! is written as a twenty-one-page illustrated booklet following Jim and his mom as they begin their journey into the world of music and Suzuki violin lessons.
With her imaginative approach, St. Clair has managed to capture the experience of starting a new instrument, with text and illustrations that guide the reader through the steps necessary to a successful beginning for the student and parent in the Suzuki approach. The language in the book is always purposeful and informative without sounding unnecessarily instructive. The illustrations (by her father, Cy St. Clair) are colorful and capture the mood of the text with a positive attitude. They show the wonder and fun of discovering each new aspect of learning along the way.
The book is written for parents and their children to share. Most importantly, it emphasizes the essential elements we ourselves as teachers would explain to a parent inquiring about lessons for their child: from listening, to observation, parent participation, step-by-step mastery, repetition of skills in the home practice and group lessons. This book is an appropriate length for children at the youngest level while remaining a clear, concise source of information for the parents as well.
While the book describes in particular the experiences of a new violin student, the messages delineated are universal for any instrumental study in the Suzuki method. It is a handy read to have around any teacher’s studio. We can all look forward to Katrin’s further publications titled Solo Recital and Suzuki Institute.

Congratulations to the Hartt Suzuki String Program on twenty-five years of excellence in Suzuki education, and to Teri Einfeldt, who was honored at last weekend’s celebrations!
At the January 18-19, 2014, weekend of celebrations, Teri Einfeldt was honored with the State of Connecticut’s Governor’s Proclamation for her development and growth of the program and was presented the distinctive Alfred C.
