The Latin American Suzuki Ensemble needs your help!

What’s What? Suzuki Americas 2014 and the Latin American Ensemble
Several months ago, we announced Suzuki Americas 2014—the first official gathering of Suzuki students from North, Central and South America—which will take place at the SAA’s 16th Biennial Conference and feature cross-cultural concerts, play-ins, and special activities.
A related student event scheduled for the 2014 Conference is the Latin American Suzuki Ensemble. So what’s the difference? And why do we need to raise money?
Suzuki Americas 2014 is open to all Suzuki students everywhere to attend, either in person in Minneapolis or to enjoy from home through video streaming. Registration information will be made available in January for students who wish to participate in person. We’re encouraging teachers who won’t be in Minneapolis to organize events in their studio for students to play along with the streaming video.
Featured music will be folk pieces from the cultures of Canada, the United States, and Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking Latin America.The music will be posted for download on the SAA website by February, plus a review list of Suzuki pieces for students to prepare.
The Latin American Suzuki Ensemble is a tour group of 38 students from Latin America who will travel to the 2014 SAA Conference for their own performances at the concert. They will also be invited to participate in Suzuki Americas 2014 with children from the United States and Canada. These students, their teachers, and their parents or chaperones will travel a great distance at a great cost to participate in these events and share with the rest of the SAA the wonderful work being done with Suzuki music education in Latin America. We are pledging our support and have a goal to raise $30,000 to support the Latin American Suzuki Ensemble.

Catching Up with Suzuki Grads
Give it 100
Growing up as a Suzuki student, cellist Karen Cheng perhaps didn’t realize the impact her practicing would make on the rest of her life and the world around her. Co-founder of Give it 100, a social network encouraging people to share the adventure of 100 days of practice, Karen has spread the value and inspiration of practicing, including the frustrations, persistence, and successes. Members of Give it 100 upload 10 second videos recording each day of their practice for a selected skill, with a challenge of reaching 100 days of practice. Karen writes,
“When you watch someone perform or score the winning point—you’re only seeing a brief moment of glory. What you don’t see is thousands of hours of preparation. You don’t see the self doubt, lost sleep, the lonely nights working. You don’t see the moment they started. The moment they were just like you, wondering how they could ever be good.
We made 100 for you to see that moment. Everyone starts a beginner. When I look back at old videos of my dancing - they’re so bad, I cringe.
But I also feel something else: Woah. I’ve come a long way.
A child doesn’t notice when she’s growing taller. It’s the same way when you’re learning something. It happens so gradually, you hardly notice you’re getting better.

With stories featured on NBC, Huffington Post, The Talent Code, and many other sources, Give it 100 has become an inspiration to people across the country to apply the Suzuki philosophies of repetition, persistence, and making practicing fun are embodied in Karen’s vision for the organization. Active Individual: $72 USD
Active Group: $80 USD
Associate: $37 USD
Patron: no change
Lifetime: $1295 USD

Eleanor Allen and Friends
It is with great sadness that I write about the passing of Eleanor Allen, admired mentor and dear friend of mine. Her presence will be sorely missed—especially here in the Heart of America. Did You Know?
SAA User Profile Page
Members can control what personal information is shown on the member directory profile page through their user account settings. Look at you own settings page to see: https://suzukiassociation.org/user/opt/
The default privacy settings for the online member directory and included member information is members only. This means users must be current SAA members to search the member directory and view profile pages.
A few pieces of personal info default to “no one” (meaning they are not visible in the online directory at all). This includes full mailing address (city and state are shown) and registered training. These settings can be changed through your user account, if you desire.
By setting your member profile page to public, your page will be accessible to any internet user and can be found from a Google search or search on the SAA website for your name. Public profile pages are also linked to your teacher search listing, if you have one.
Public profile pages are a great way for members to show their Suzuki credentials: SAA membership, registered training, teaching availability, Certificates of Achievement, etc. You can easily include a link to your SAA profile page on your own website, Facebook page, or other online marketing resources.
Members can additionally opt-out of the online directory by setting your profile page visibility to “no one.”

Suzuki Principles in Action: Upcoming Courses
Suzuki Principles in Action (SPA) is a two day, cross-instrumental course designed to help teachers incorporate Suzuki’s principles effectively in their teaching. The course focuses on how to teach, not what to teach, allowing the sharing of ideas among all instrument areas.
