Math Fun for Suzuki Families
The newly re-released book
Math Fun for Suzuki Families by Andy J. Felt and George Kung is now available in the SAA Online Store. Using principles of Dr. Suzuki’s approach to education applied to mathematics, Math Fun features more than 50 games for children and parents to play together to build a solid foundation in math.
After adopting Dr. Suzuki’s philosophy into his own teaching methods, Felt, an associate professor of mathematical sciences at the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point and Suzuki parent of two, developed Math Fun with his colleague George Kung, a former Suzuki parent, in hopes of combating the popular cultural notion that an individual either is or isn’t a “math person.” Designed to be integrated into instrument or voice lessons or played separately, Math Fun activities provide tools for families to build essential math skills in children while having fun together.
Every child can learn math—and everyone can have fun in the process!

So what does it mean for the SAA to be the Suzuki Association of the Americas, plural? When the SAA was established in 1972, it was charged with the responsibility to care for and nurture the development of the Suzuki method in all of North and South America, which includes Canada, the United States and all of the countries in Central and South America! This is a huge territory and involves people speaking four different languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese and French. What a big job!
Canada is a whole separate subject, so I’m going to limit myself to a discussion about what is going on in Latin America, where I lived for five years in the 1980s. I really enjoyed my time in Lima, Peru, and Santiago, Chile, and I have continued teaching all over Latin America since then. I have been amazed and very pleased with the growth of Suzuki programs since I first taught there in 1982. There are now so many well-established programs in at least ten Latin American countries, and courses have been taught and teachers are teaching in more countries than that. The SAA lists fifteen Latin American countries that have SAA members, with a total of 450 members in these countries. There are even more members of the various country associations. Since the SAA was founded, 997 SAA training courses have been taught in Latin America.

Call for Board Nominations
Do you know a SAA member who fits these qualities?
- Someone who speaks with passion about the positive effects of the Suzuki Method and the SAA.
- Someone with an ability to work well in a group.
- Someone who follows through on their tasks.
- Someone who is a good listener.
- Someone who has sensitivity and tolerance of those with a different point of view.
- Someone with a sense of humor.
- Someone with an ability to focus on the “big picture” issues.
If you know of someone who fits these characteristics, please let us know their name, as these are characteristics of an ideal SAA Board Member.
Every year at this time, the SAA Board looks for SAA members and friends who would be interested in being considered for election to the SAA Board of Directors. This is a three-year commitment. New members are added each year as outgoing members complete their three-year commitment. This process of electing new members each year gives life and vitality to the vision of the SAA.
Nominees may be experienced teachers, parents and/or professionals who have legal, financial, marketing, or administrative experience. It is the goal of the nominating committee to select a slate that represents all facets of the SAA community.
