The Suzuki method and philosophy originated in Asia from the brilliance of founder Shinichi Suzuki, whose summative mantra was “Where love is deep, much can be accomplished.” We extend deepest sorrow in regard to the most recent exhibit of hate towards Asian Americans, and express solidarity with our SAA members, students, and family members of Asian descent. Our mission continues to be to develop beautiful hearts through beautiful tone, and to encourage intentional respect and deep love for each teacher, student, and parent engaged in this life-long process of becoming. We all have a part to contribute in building a more just society in which everyone is safe, and where diverse voices are heard, treated with respect and dignity, and celebrated. Suzuki Association Survey, (2020)The 2020 SAA Membership Survey was completed by 14% of our members and provides input and direction for the Board. We were pleased with the level of strong support for our SAA Ends statements and goals. In the two charts below, you can view the first two of SAA’s Ends Statements and the level of membership support for those Ends. With such strong member support, the SAA Board is encouraged to further increase its efforts in those important Ends areas. During the meeting, the discussions were related to the improvement of communication with the SAA, and the need to define some points about Teaching Strategies Course in Latin America. In addition, representatives of the Suzuki Associations of Brazil, Peru, and Mexico shared their experiences on the functioning of their national associations; teachers from the Associations of Guatemala and Ecuador were present. IRSTE NewsThe International Research Symposium on Talent Education (IRSTE) is pleased to announce that we’ve published our research study Caring For, About, and With: Exploring Musical Meaningfulness Among Suzuki Students and Parents. In it, the team explored the relationships between Suzuki group lessons, students’ empathy, and their parents’ beliefs and values about music learning. If you would like to learn more, the article is available free of charge at https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/feduc.2021.648776/full SECE Curriculum Revision CourseStarting in May 2021, there will be several opportunities for SECE teachers to take a SECE Curriculum Revision Course. The courses will be available to any SECE teachers who have previously registered a minimum of ECC and SECE Stage One training with the SAA. Revisions to the SECE curriculum have been underway since July 2020 with a focus on bringing diversity, equity, inclusion, and access to the Suzuki Early Childhood Education Classroom. The SECE Curriculum Revision Courses will be taught in teams of two Teacher Trainers including Sharon Jones, Lynn McCall, Wan Tsai Chen, & Danette Warren Schuh. Each course will be 5 hours in length, over one day, with a maximum of 30 participants. The platform for these courses will be Zoom. The fee per course/per person will be $85 and SECE teachers will be able to register the course with the SAA. Please watch the SAA Event Page for the upcoming SECE Curriculum Revision Course dates. A Long TalkOver 80 teachers participated in “A Long Talk about the Uncomfortable Truth” https://www.alongtalk.com, presented by Kyle Williams. This DEIA training was jointly sponsored by Atlanta Suzuki Institute, Western Springs School of Talent Education, and the SAA. Thanks to the Atlanta Suzuki Institute Staff and Board for hosting this very successful event! Much appreciate was expressed for the course, and positive feedback continues! We look forward to providing more opportunities in the future.
Contribute to the American Suzuki Journal!The ASJ is always looking for more submissions. If you’re a teacher, parent, or student with an idea for an article, please reach out to allie@suzukiassociation.org. Pitches and full drafts are welcome. The ASJ is recruiting for an advisory committee full of people who love to read the ASJ. The journal is the signature voice of Suzuki education in the Americas and has wide readership across the globe. We are always looking to improve the quality of what’s inside our pages, as well as improve representation from the widespread SAA community. Committee members would meet remotely twice a year to audit the journal and pitch improvements to both content and form. They would also help with occasional writing, reviewing, and proofreading. Submit a brief note of interest to publications@suzukiassociation.org, and let us know why you would be a good committee member. We are looking for voices that represent the diversity of our membership. Journal staff are looking for small illustrations of every Suzuki instrument, as well as more general music-related drawings (music notes and staff, orchestra, music stand, etc). These illustrations will be kept on file and used in future journals. All ages and artistic levels are welcome to submit, including teachers, parents, and students. Please send images to editor@suzukiassociation.org. We are also looking for teen and student contributors to write columns about the student experience. Columns could be about practice and motivation, community, listening, balancing music with school work, etc. Please spread the word to your children and students. If you have an interested student, please email allie@suzukiassociation.org.  Membership DirectoryBased on feedback received from our Active Members, we will be limiting the press run of the printed Membership Directory for 2021. If you are an Active SAA member in North America, you may indicate in your profile settings if you prefer not to receive the Directory by mail. We need to hear from you by April 1! (Note: Active Latin American Members and Active members outside the SAA region do not receive publications and notifications by mail, except by special mail subscription.)
