The Music Library of Margery Aber to be Auctioned

by Pat D’Ercole

Music— Margery Aber

The music library of Margery V. Aber will be auctioned through the Silent Auction Pro app July 22 to 31, 2021. The library contains hundreds of titles and various instrumentations from violin and piano solos to chamber music for all string combinations, and many string quartets. There is music for the young reader as well as the seasoned professional. Many selections have her autograph and/or her fingering.

The music is organized into packets by instrumentation. Auction participants will be able to peruse the packets by instrumentation. The title, composer, publisher and editor is listed for each piece, as well if it contains any notations from Miss Aber.

“We’re hoping that many of her former students and colleagues would like her copy of a piece that they learned or performed with her. We also think it will be a great way for young teachers to build their library with minimal cost. Others may find a selection that’s out of print,” said Pat D’Ercole who is preparing the sale. “We picked this week as it overlaps the American Suzuki Institute 50th Jubilee celebration. Marge was the founder of this, the first institute outside of Japan, so it only seemed appropriate to pair the two together.”

All are welcome to bid at the auction and to attend the virtual ASI Jubilee celebration. Watch for more information on Facebook and spread the word! All proceeds will go to the American Suzuki Foundation.

INSTITUTES

Acadiana Suzuki Strings—2021

Acadiana Suzuki Strings Institute 2021

After two seasons without gathering together, the Acadiana Suzuki Strings Institute recently wrapped up the first in-person Suzuki Institute of 2021 on the spacious and beautiful campus of the Episcopal School of Acadiana, What a great experience it was for all involved!

Students came from 8 states across the country (AL, CA, LA, MO, MS, TN, TX, UT) and teachers added an additional 3 states (OK, MD, ID). This indicates a strong desire to gather after so many months — years for some — apart. ASSI typically sees students from about half this number of states, and this year, the institute required a longer than normal waiting list.

Of course, organizers Lauren Baker and Molly Goforth put in place precautions to make sure everyone stayed safe. Their decision to move forward with ASSI included several considerations:

  • Episcopal School of Acadiana (ESA) completed an entire year of in-person school with no outbreaks.
  • ESA has no hallways — the campus is made up of separate classroom buildings which open outdoors so students walked outside to get to different classes.
  • CASPR units were installed in every space at the beginning of the school year which eliminates 99.9% of all viruses and bacteria on surfaces and in the air.
  • Every classroom was carefully measured and seating was assigned to ensure 3-feet of spacing between each family and the teachers.
  • All CDC and state mandates were followed and exceeded — masks required of everyone, no drinking or snacking in classrooms, keeping 3-feet of distance.

In addition to Suzuki master classes and group sessions, ASSI offers a choice of Fiddling or Art as extracurriculars, plus World Drumming as a required class. During certain parts of the day, the drummers could be heard far outside the gym, which provided a strong, steady rhythm for our shady strolls under the oak trees to different classrooms. That rhythm was the joyful heartbeat we felt together again, enjoying our Suzuki family!

My student Avery completed book one today! This was the first time we’d been physically together since the pandemic started! I am so proud she kept charging on and learning book one online! How courageous these young students were! Cheers!
